In collaboration with Varberg Energi and Ferroamp, they are advancing Boat-to-Grid (B2G) technology that allows hybrid and electric vessels to utilize their batteries for grid support while earning compensation.
Pioneering Boating Technology with App Control
Varberg Energi has designed an application aimed at streamlining the connection of boats to the electrical grid during test phases of B2G technology. When a vessel is docked and charging, this app enables Varberg Energi to manage energy flow—charging or discharging batteries and linking them to various power markets throughout winter when vessels typically remain stationary.

The Push Towards Electric Maritime Solutions
Volvo’s commitment to marine electrification began six years ago and is on the verge of significant progress. “Electric applications are becoming more cost-effective compared to traditional diesel engines; this tipping point will undoubtedly spur market growth,” stated Niklas Thulin, Director of Electromobility at Volvo Penta.

With intentions set on leading the marine industry, Volvo Penta plans limited production runs of cutting-edge hybrid-electric propulsion systems starting late 2025 for various classes such as yachts and commercial ships. This system offers almost silent operation coupled with reduced noise during electric mode—a factor that enhances comfort onboard while positively impacting interactions with nature. The innovative battery-powered technology minimizes generator reliance providing quieter nights aboard ships.
The propulsion solutions come equipped with advanced features—including Joystick Driving capability—that simplify docking maneuvers allowing operators access to emission-free zones vital under strict environmental regulations approved by EPA Tier 3 standards along with IMO II/III compliance rules.
