The often-overlooked electric hot water systems, typically stowed away in garages or sometimes placed outside in Australia, are now being ingeniously repurposed to enhance electricity grid reliability. Historically, Australians have relied on Tariff 33 to activate these systems overnight when electricity rates dip due to surplus energy from coal-fired power plants. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has collaborated with PLUS ES, AGL Energy, and the University of New South Wales to initiate a pioneering two-year trial aimed at coordinating the hot water load of 20,000 existing smart meters.
