In January 2025, Volvo Cars reported a total of 50,820 vehicle sales, with nearly half of these vehicles incorporating plug-in technology. This marks a significant increase in plugin model sales compared to the previous year, showcasing a 17% rise when juxtaposed with January 2024 figures.
Breakdown of Plugin Vehicle Sales
Out of the total sales in January, an impressive 44%—that’s 22,398 vehicles—were plugin options. A deeper dive reveals that 9,705 units, accounting for 19% of all vehicle sales, were fully electric models (up by 5% year-over-year). Additionally, 12,693 units, or 25% of the overall sales tally were plug-in hybrids—which represented a robust increase of 28% over the same month last year.

Volvo’s general vehicle sales declined by 5%, falling from 53,402 in January 2024 to this year’s tally. With healthy areas like plugin cars witnessing growth but overall numbers trending downwards implies noteworthy declines in traditional gasoline-powered vehicle demand. Fossil-fuel-driven car sales—including mild hybrids—plummeted by an alarming 17% during this period—a change that oddly mirrors the uptick seen in plugin vehicle transactions.
On one hand, it’s encouraging to witness a historic company such as Volvo embracing electric mobility at full throttle; on another note it’s pertinent to remember how relatively small Volvo is as an automaker. Their monthly delivery figure hovers around 50 thousand units which translates into roughly 600 thousand annually—a fraction compared to industry leader Tesla’s volumes.
However you slice it though: acknowledging that 19% and 44% proportions reflects growing acceptance and transition towards sustainable driving options at Volvo is encouraging progress within the automotive sector.
