Compounding this predicament is emerging research indicating that instead of mitigating environmental harm as claimed, increased utilization of hydrogen may actually exacerbate climate change by inhibiting methane decomposition—a fact quantified recently indicating its potency ranges from 13 to 37 times greater than carbon dioxide depending upon time frames considered (100-year vs 20-year).
