Record-Breaking Growth in Residential Energy Storage
The residential energy storage segment recently achieved a historic milestone with a staggering 346 MW installed during the third quarter of 2024—an impressive 63% rise compared to the previous quarter. Top-performing states like California, Arizona, and North Carolina accounted for this growth by increasing their household storage installations by 56%, 73%, and a remarkable 100%, respectively, from Q2 to Q3. This trend underscores an unprecedented surge in demand within the residential sector.
Across all sectors combined, approximately 3.8 GW of storage capacity was added—a significant uptick of about 80% year-over-year when comparing figures from Q3 last year.
A Surge in Grid-scale Energy Storage Capacity
The grid-scale aspect of energy storage also set records this past quarter with deployments reaching 3,431 MW alongside 9,188 megawatt-hours (MWh) added during this robust period for market expansion. Cumulatively across all sectors within this space, total deployments hit approximately 3,806 MW and 9,931 MWh, showing increases of 80% and 58%, respectively.
“The growth we are witnessing within the U.S. energy storage industry addresses critical needs for reliable and cost-effective solutions across communities,” remarked John Hensley from ACP’s leadership team. “With anticipated new installations reaching up to 64 GW over the next four years alone, it’s unequivocal that energy storage will play an essential role in future grid stability.”
Unyielding Demand from Texas and California
The third quarter demonstrated remarkable momentum for grid-scale deployments led by Texas and California—two states committed to leveraging innovative energy solutions effectively.’
