The latest update of the ChatGPT app for macOS introduces functionality to write code directly within Xcode, positioning it as a rival to Apple’s Swift Assist and GitHub Copilot.
While various third-party AI coding assistants have been operational on macOS, OpenAI is enhancing its offerings with this new ChatGPT app upgrade. The innovative “work with apps” feature enables users to interact seamlessly with ChatGPT while working within Xcode and other Integrated Development Environments (IDEs).
According to TechCrunch, this update incorporates an “auto-apply” mode that allows ChatGPT to modify code autonomously without needing user confirmation for each action. This capability was showcased in a social media video by Alexander Embiricos from the OpenAI team.

This update is currently rolling out to subscribers of the ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans as of Thursday; Enterprise, educational institutions, and free users will gain access in the following week. Windows users can expect this feature shortly.
Within Xcode itself resides Swift Assist—a generative coding assistant developed by Apple that operates via private cloud servers—while options like GitHub Copilot have also been previously available for developer assistance.
Developers must carefully consider the potential risks associated with utilizing third-party AI tools when handling sensitive code data. Apple assures its customers that any submitted code is neither retained nor utilized for machine learning purposes.
There’s speculation surrounding additional enhancements to Swift Assist during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) scheduled for June. Until those features are revealed, developers will benefit from integrating third-party tools like ChatGPT alongside Apple’s existing functionalities.
