The Future of Electric Truck Charging Infrastructure in the U.S.
In 2023, to address the scarcity of electric truck charging locations, the federal government initiated the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. One notable initiative within this program is named “Transport Electrification Supporting Semis Operating in Arizona, California, and Texas,” abbreviated as TESSERACT. This plan aims to develop nine charging stations for electric trucks along a corridor beginning in Fremont, California, extending southward through Compton and then heading towards Phoenix before progressing eastward to Laredo, Texas.
Each planned station is designed to feature eight high-capacity 750 kW chargers specifically for Tesla’s Semi trucks along with four additional chargers compatible with electric vehicles from other brands—a requirement for qualifying for federal funding support. Despite an ambitious self-investment of $24 million alongside anticipated federal contributions, Tesla’s efforts have faced challenges; their proposals were rejected during both initial rounds of CFI funding assessments in 2024—even with backing from California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). The total funds requested by applicants amounted to $100 million aimed at setting up the TESSERACT network.
