Earlier this year, I speculated that BYD might ascend to become the world’s leading automaker. Shortly thereafter, it became apparent that they were closer to that ambition than anticipated. Even now, as I analyze various reports throughout the year, I’ve discovered exciting news: as of November, BYD has reportedly become the second best-selling automobile manufacturer globally.
Recent data emerging from China indicates that BYD outperformed Volkswagen in November and is now trailing only behind Toyota in overall vehicle sales across the globe. “The latest figures indicate that Toyota maintained its position as the world’s top car manufacturer for November with a staggering 667,900 units sold. In contrast, BYD recorded sales of 417,000 vehicles—surpassing Volkswagen—which managed to sell 401,100 units and stands third in worldwide sales.”
When examining performance from January through November inclusive this year, BYD secured fourth place overall and was closely trailing Ford. This suggests a strong possibility that by the end of 2024, BYD could solidify itself within third place.
Between January and November’s brand-specific sales data reveals an impressive ranking system: Toyota leads with total sales reaching approximately 7.69 million units; Volkswagen follows with nearly 4.43 million; and Ford places third at around 3.39 million units sold globally. Notably among Chinese manufacturers—BYD’s cumulative total reached approximately 3.36 million vehicles sold during this period positioning it fourth worldwide while Geely Auto placed eighteenth with about 992,800 vehicles.
The velocity at which BYD has climbed up these rankings is nothing short of remarkable—a true testament to its commitment to electric mobility as a dedicated provider of plug-in vehicles implies significant progress ahead still before obtaining Toyota’s status at number one yet appears increasingly likely over time.
Interestingly enough: although facing stiff competition within international markets where surging demand for electric-powered automobiles grows—BYD has made significant strides even going so far as supplying pivotal components for Toyota’s electric vehicle segment specifically tailored towards Chinese consumers due particularly heightened interest therein—an area where Toyota struggles independently at present given ongoing market dynamics revealing over fifty percent uptake amongst new buyers gravitating toward plugged-in options available today.
