However, before even generating its first kilogram of hydrogen, the project unraveled. The Pune Municipal Corporation retracted its investment of ₹90 crore (about $11 million) after realizing that support from India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission for an additional $30 million subsidy would not materialize. Economic assessments estimated that producing hydrogen would cost between $6 and $8 per kilogram—significantly higher than prevailing market prices. Environmental impact projections indicated that each ton of produced hydrogen would generate between 40 to 60 tons of CO₂ emissions—a carbon footprint rivaling traditional methods such as steam methane reforming natural gas or electrolysis in areas like Pune with a high grid carbon intensity.
