Pioneering Renewable Energy in New Mexico: A Community Effort
In a significant step forward for sustainable energy in New Mexico, Affordable Solar has started building the state’s first community solar initiative. The Cuidando Los Niños Community Solar Project is located in Valencia County and aims to enhance access to renewable energy while promoting community-led sustainability throughout the region.
A Collaborative Effort
This initiative represents a partnership between Affordable Solar and Gridworks, a prominent engineering and construction firm based in Albuquerque. The project’s name pays homage to Cuidando Los Niños, a nonprofit organization committed to aiding children and families facing homelessness.
Legislative Framework Enabling Growth
The foundation for such projects was laid with the passage of the Community Solar Act (SB84) in April 2021. This legislation permits utility customers to subscribe to renewable energy produced by facilities not exceeding 5 megawatts (MW), allowing subscribers to reduce their electricity bills through credits accrued from their participation. Community solar proves especially beneficial for individuals, businesses, and non-profits that lack the capability or space for personal solar installations, thereby making clean energy more accessible.
Fostering Social Equity Through Clean Energy
A key feature of the Cuidando Los Niños project is its dedication to social equity. It allocates half of its total energy production specifically aimed at lowering electricity expenses for eligible low-income households, ensuring that diverse communities can benefit from renewable power sources.
A Bold Vision For Future Energy Consumption
Affordable Solar has ambitious plans with seven community solar projects cumulatively generating 35 MW of power; together they are expected to offset energy usage equivalent to around 15,000 residential homes—representing a notable advancement in New Mexico’s transition towards clean energy solutions.
Voices from Project Leads
Dylan Connelly, Project Developer at Affordable Solar, shared his excitement about this groundbreaking venture: “After nearly four years of dedicated effort, we’re thrilled to finally break ground on this monumental project that will extend renewable resources across New Mexico’s communities. This endeavor not only underscores our commitment towards environmentally friendly practices but also illustrates our goal of uplifting those living within these communities.”
Caring For Our Communities: Continuing Support Initiatives
In keeping with its mission-centered approach, Affordable Solar has vowed financial support towards Cuidando Los Niños with an initial donation made upon gaining project approval; moreover, an additional substantial contribution is slated following its anticipated completion in early summer 2025.
