Canoo: A Rollercoaster Ending for an EV Dream
The ambitious electric vehicle startup Canoo has officially succumbed to bankruptcy, filing its case on January 17, 2025. As one might reflect with a touch of irony, “What a remarkable journey this has been.” A decade back, the landscape was bustling with numerous EV startups vying for attention and investment; it was akin to a thriving marketplace.
Among those hopefuls was Workhorse—a company that pitched an innovative battery electric pickup featuring a range-extending engine. Faraday Future made waves with promises of advanced technology and plans for a new manufacturing facility near Las Vegas that hinged upon state funding support. Lucid Motors emerged under the guidance of ex-Tesla employee leadership while Fisker launched its own endeavors (inexplicably referred to as Part One).
The Birth of Canoo from Evolozcity
Founded in 2017 by former Faraday Future associates Stefan Krause and Ulrich Kranz, Evolozcity had its roots intertwined in high ambitions. Krause had previously held the position of CFO at Deutsche Bank while Kranz served senior roles within BMW’s leadership structure. After parting ways with Faraday’s management team due to internal conflicts, they paved their path as independent visionaries.
Krause took on the CEO mantle at Evolozcity with Kranz become CTO—the duo lured significant funding from Chinese investor Li Pak-tam alongside German entrepreneur David Stern targeting substantial initial backing. In April 2018, they brought Karl-Thomas Neumann into their fold as Senior Executive—another feather in their cap.
Name Change and Innovative Concepts
By March 2019, Evolozcity rebranded itself as Canoo—a name change signaling fresh aspirations moving forward into product development.
Just half a year later came unveiling plans for their first production prototype: an avant-garde battery-powered van resembling an eclectic mix between classic Volkswagen Transporters and Buckminster Fuller’s futuristic Dymaxion design philosophy.
Canoo introduced what could be deemed revolutionary: an electric skateboard platform capable of accommodating interchangeable bodies known as “top hats.” This innovation meant consumers could select diverse configurations based on need—be it utility vans or sporty two-seaters tailored explicitly around personal preference or functionality needs.
A Bumpy Road Ahead
Canoo’s subsequent announcement regarding financial struggles went hand in hand with complaints about lackluster governmental backing despite having contracts involving reputable clients like NASA and the U.S Department of Defense among others stating “Even though we are American-made…we have yet again encountered hindrances preventing requisite financial backing.” Attempts were underway dealing out international prospects but ultimately led nowhere solidifying their misfortunes further through insolvency filings.
