Upcoming CarPlay Refresh: What’s Next?
Initially slated for a 2024 launch, Apple’s anticipated next-generation CarPlay has yet to make its debut. The tech giant reassured users that it is collaborating with multiple automotive manufacturers toward the development of CarPlay 2.
During WWDC 2022, Apple unveiled its vision for the upgraded CarPlay experience. However, over two and a half years have passed without any vehicles equipped with this innovative system hitting the market.
Ongoing Collaboration with Automakers
Even in light of delays and an apparent stagnation in progress, Apple continues to feature next-gen CarPlay prominently on its website. The company describes this upcoming update as set to deliver “the ultimate iPhone integration within vehicles.” While the current version primarily manages infotainment systems, the new iteration will extend functionality across all digital displays within cars—including dashboards.
Apple had previously indicated that initial models showcasing CarPlay 2 would be available by early 2024; however, as we moved into January 2025, references to this timeline were quietly removed from their site. Yet despite these setbacks, Apple remains committed to rolling out what they deem as a significant evolution in their automotive software. In response to inquiries from MacRumors regarding these delays, an Apple spokesperson stated:
“The upcoming iteration of CarPlay leverages vast insights derived from years of successful operation while delivering seamlessly integrated customizable experiences tailored by both Apple and automakers. We’re diligently working alongside various car manufacturers who will reveal more specifics about their models compatible with next-generation CarPlay as announcements approach.”
No Clear Timeline Amidly Awaited Features
No definitive schedule for releasing CarPlay 2 has been shared by Apple; thus, potential users may have considerable waiting ahead given past postponements.
A Glimpse at Advanced Features on the Horizon
Recent leaks suggest ongoing enhancements for CarPlay 2 could include iPhone-style widgets designed to enrich user interaction significantly. Reports indicate that users might enjoy extensive customization options or freedom in placing widgets at various locations on screen interfaces—allowing a more personalized driving experience than ever before.
