Revolutionizing EV Charging: The Power Pole Solution
For electric vehicle (EV) owners without access to private parking spaces or garages, finding a charging station can be a daunting task. Intellihub, an innovative company based in Australia, is tackling this challenge by utilizing existing power poles as charging stations. Supported by a grant of AU$871,000 from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), which contributes to a total project cost of AU$2.04 million, Intellihub has recently completed 50 installations in Sydney.
Who Is Intellihub?
Describing itself as a leader in digital energy management solutions, Intellihub provides advanced metering technologies and services to over 50 energy retailers throughout Australia and New Zealand. Their expertise extends beyond just meter reading; they are also involved in various sectors including solar energy and water management, along with electric vehicle charging initiatives.
A Blueprint for Future Developments
The goal of the initiative has been articulated by ARENA: “The Intellihub Street Power Pole EV Charger with Grid Integration project seeks to devise technical guidelines and regulatory frameworks that will assist local governments and network providers in rolling out street-based electric vehicle charging using existing power pole infrastructure.”
The Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) association proudly notes its role in enabling sustainable transportation choices. Over the past decade alone, it has installed more than 15,000 chargers benefiting upwards of 10,000 clients while displacing roughly 870 million liters of petrol annually.
Learnt Lessons for Future Projects
One crucial takeaway from this collaboration is that significant time must be reserved for obtaining necessary approvals; it’s recommended to allocate at least nine months for navigating through councils and necessary stakeholders such as Distributed Network Service Providers (DNSP). The process can involve up to fifteen distinct stages sequentially. To combat potential setbacks due to site rejections by councils—often four times more sites were required initially—the partners had no choice but to increase their workload significantly.
Navigating Approval Challenges
A specific example given highlights that identified sites must be submitted two weeks prior to initiating a month-long community engagement phase followed by waiting periods tied into council traffic committees’ schedules—which typically meet every one or two months—before final approvals are granted. If community engagement concludes right after one such meeting cycle ends, teams might find themselves delayed until another meeting occurs up to two months later.
Coping with Community Sentiment
Difficulties encountered during public consultations led some proposed sites being firmly opposed due variety reasons spanning from public concerns about radiation exposure and interference with medical devices, all the way through proprietary external views dismissive towards the idea of electric vehicles being “toys for wealthy elites.” Thankfully though feedback indicated around 70% general support toward the project—a promising sign compared against typical local government projects earning only about half that amount—and altering charger locations often resolved many issues.
The Built Environment: Custom Hardware Solutions
Together with EVSE collaborators tailored hardware was designed where two distinct units—a charger adapted specifically for off-street public use integrated alongside localized switchboards—made their debut during this initial experimental rollout across Australasia’s dynamic landscape whilst factoring aesthetic impact amongst road users into development considerations too.
Furthermore locating proper telecommunications capabilities proved essential since they are mandatory alongside installation expenses generating ongoing maintenance costs yearly post initiation phase.nnTo optimize understanding throughout installation mechanics ahead kicking off engagements projects went so far creating mock setups yielding efficiency gains dramatically reducing both lead-time & resources needed daily completion standards held high within respective compliance protocols worldwide adherence.nSimilarly data gathering efforts presently focus multiple aspects influencing customer interactions analytics regarding how usage patterns evolve surrounding implementations subsequent inquiries demand-wise tied back revenue generation streams accordingly.”
