BMW’s Electric Vehicle Growth in Australia
In 2024, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) achieved a noteworthy milestone by selling around 26,341 vehicles across Australia. This uptick reflects a modest increase from the previous year’s figures and represents an impressive 15% rise compared to 2022. The classification of these sales encompasses petrol cars, diesel models, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Notably, of the total sales, an impressive 7,787 were fully electric models. Ranking as the fourth best-selling EV brand in Australia, BMW trails only Tesla, BYD, and MG—demonstrating that over 30% of its Australian sales now consist of BEVs.
The Surge in Electric Sales
Motivated by my examination of various electric vehicle (EV) sales statistics within Australia and beyond, I found BMW had notably sold approximately 2,500 units of the iX1 model alone; alongside over 2,000 i4s; around 1,100 iX2s; near to 1k units of iX3; as well as smaller quantities like 556 iX5s and roughly 800 electric MINIs. In totality these figures paint a positive picture for BMW’s commitment towards electrification.
I must admit that I have held some skepticism toward BMW in recent years due to their noticeable setback after the revolutionary launch of their award-winning model—the i3. My own experience included driving the i3 before ultimately opting for a Tesla Model 3 because it offered more technology features and potential for future updates through over-the-air software improvements—notably absent from earlier BMW offerings.
Banish Preconceived Notions
Recently however my perspective has shifted after discovering astonishing growth statistics regarding BEV sales in Europe—surprisingly indicating that BMW plugins outpaced Tesla’s offerings there! On a global scale during January through September lines up with reports showing plugin sales reaching approximately 16.8%, signifying an upward trend at current manufacturing plants specializing largely within China where they are producing boththe new electrical X series along with updated MINI models aimed at various international markets despite anticipated obstacles from European union tariffs.

Exploring electric vehicles (EVs) can be overwhelming for potential buyers, especially when faced with various options like Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). Sales representatives often find themselves educating customers on the distinctions between these types to help them determine which drivetrain best fits their lifestyle. As one salesperson remarked, “The complexity of EVs might be deterring newcomers—sometimes, all Aunt Cathy wants is a reliable vehicle to run errands.”
### Evaluating Pricing Trends in EV Market
When discussing price competitiveness, it’s noteworthy that the BMW eDrive 20 is priced around AU$90,000, while its counterpart in gasoline engines—the X1 18i—is valued at approximately AU$72,000. This gap highlights that achieving parity in pricing remains a challenge for electric models.
### Technological Innovations: Batteries and Charging Solutions
BMW has incorporated nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries into its EV line-up which promises an impressive range of up to 420 kilometers per charge. Additionally, every model comes equipped with two types of chargers—commonly known as a ‘granny charger’ and a type 2 connector—enhancing charging convenience. To ensure high-quality customer service standards among sales staff, BMW deploys mystery shoppers who evaluate employee performance.
### Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability sits at the core of BMW’s business model. At the end of their life cycle, vehicles are repurposed into raw materials for manufacturing new cars. The company aims to use recycled components wherever feasible; genuine leather is reserved primarily for premium models while lower-tier versions feature leather only on steering wheels. According to BMW’s sustainability agenda: “Our focus lies on sourcing materials responsibly and ensuring they are processed either carbon-free or with minimal carbon footprints.” In collaboration with Redwood Materials, the brand actively engages in battery recycling initiatives.
### Maintenance Strategies and Warranty Offers
While providing over-the-air software updates signifies technological advancement for BMW owners, maintenance routines remain crucial; cars require servicing every 15,000 kilometers or annually. Notably advantageous is that maintaining an electric vehicle incurs about half the expense compared to internal combustion engine counterparts—notable savings for drivers over time! Moreover, warranties extend five years for the vehicle itself and eight years covering battery performance up to 160,000 kilometers.
### Design Features That Stand Out
Encountering these innovative vehicles on roads can be quite rare until one gets familiarized with their distinct features—the lack of grilles being noticeably striking due to their sleek designs. Majella experienced firsthand how opulent and accommodating the interior space feels within models like the iX1—a spacious cabin boasting fewer control stalks compared to other brands such as Renault enhances user-friendliness while ensuring straightforward maintenance resembling Tesla’s simplicity.

Recently, we had a chance to experience a BMW, and it left quite an impression on us. With its luxury finish and attention to detail, this vehicle stands out in terms of value for money when compared to others in its class. In contrast, stepping back into our Tesla felt like reverting to a more economical standard of comfort. It’s worth noting that our Tesla has been around for five years now; perhaps we will appreciate the modernization once we test drive the updated Model Y.
