Exploring Cisco’s Enhanced Troubleshooting Learning Path
Cisco continues to innovate in the realm of networking certifications, especially with their emphasis on troubleshooting skills. For those familiar with the CCNP Routing & Switching certification from 2010, the exams ROUTE, SWITCH, and TSHOOT were integral. Fast forward to today, TSHOOT remains a significant memory for many. This examination presented a distinctive challenge: candidates first tackled multiple-choice questions before diving into a sequence of trouble tickets that required pinpointing problems in multifaceted networks. The objective was not only to identify where things went wrong but also to ascertain which technologies needed intervention and which commands would effectively address the issues at hand.
Reflecting on my experiences with TSHOOT—having taken it several times for CCNP recertification—I recall teaching ROUTE, SWITCH, and TSHOOT courses both at various learning partners as well as at my local Networking Academy. My students thrived on tackling intricate network problems that solidified their understanding of routing and switching fundamentals.
In 2020, Cisco revolutionized its offerings by retiring the legacy CCNP Routing & Switching certification in favor of CCNP Enterprise. This new structure replaced ROUTE, SWITCH, and TSHOOT with exams ENCOR and ENARSI. Notably, ENARSI encapsulates numerous troubleshooting tasks while simultaneously covering advanced routing topics previously addressed by ROUTE.
While I appreciate the innovations found in ENCOR and ENARSI courses, there remains a sense of nostalgia for the comprehensive nature of the former TSHOOT exam.
A Modern Take on Troubleshooting Skills
Soon after joining Cisco in 2021, I identified an opportunity to share insights from my extensive experience teaching TSHOOT through a session at Cisco Live. I crafted an elaborate IPv4 and IPv6 network scenario along with 27 distinct trouble tickets challenging participants over four intensive hours—a format that has proven popular since I’ve conducted this lab nine times across various Cisco Live events over three years! The New Focus: Troubleshooting Strategies Unveiled

Cisco has rolled out an updated learning track called Troubleshooting Cisco Enterprise Networking Solutions (ENTSH), divided into two main sections: one focusing on troubleshooting methodologies alongside best practices essential for maintaining networks; another featuring five case studies that present realistic ticket resolutions drawn from fictional organizations’ scenarios.
Diving into Real-World Scenarios
- Scenario Example: You arrive at SECHNIK Networking Ltd., learning four colleagues had no issues last Friday but are now encountering several critical problems due to senior engineers being unavailable:
- Kimberly (PC1) can’t reach server resources housed under IP address 172.16.200.10.
- Andrew (PC2) reports loss of internet connectivity attempting access via public server IP address 209.165.200.2.
- Carol (PC3) struggles connecting via SSH to server address 172.16.200.10.
- Jack (PC4) emphasizes his need for IPv6 access since Andrew seems capable despite similar circumstances needing resolution too!
This case study method tests candidates’ proficiency across diverse networking concepts including VLAN configuration methods like spanning tree protocols; advanced routing principles such as EIGRP or OSPF; along with security essentials concerning NAT configurations or ACL integrations—covering essential aspects necessary within today’s environments adeptly!
