Nissan’s Upcoming EV Battery Expansion in the ‍U.S.

For continuous updates on the latest news,⁢ you can subscribe to CleanTechnica’s daily newsletter or follow us on Google News!

Major Battery Supply⁢ Agreement

A noteworthy development in the electric vehicle (EV) sector‌ has emerged from reporting by Nikkei and endorsed by various Asian media outlets, including Reuters. On January 23rd, it was⁢ confirmed that SK On will provide Nissan‌ with a substantial supply of 20⁣ gigawatt-hours of EV batteries, sufficient for about 300,000 vehicles. ⁣This agreement puts a formal stamp on discussions that were initiated last year.

This partnership will see both vehicle and battery manufacturing occurring within the United States, crucially allowing these products to qualify for tax incentives offered under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

The provisions for manufacturing-related tax credits are enshrined in⁤ law via IRA; ⁢thus, it would‍ be remarkably complex for any future administration to rescind these benefits. Despite this⁤ uncertainty surrounding regulatory changes, both Nissan and SK On project confidence in their collaborative efforts moving forward.

Electric Vehicles’ Rising Popularity

This news follows a strong sales performance from Nissan’s electric offerings last year—including its Leaf‌ model‌ and‌ Ariya crossover SUV. As remarked by CleanTechnica editor Zachary Shahan, just one month ago: “Ten‌ years back, it would ‌have seemed inconceivable to⁤ see an electric crossover from ‌Nissan with over 200 miles ‍range priced⁣ under $40,000 while ⁣also allowing access to Tesla Superchargers.” (Check out our extensive archive related to Nissan here).

Advancements Towards Solid-State Batteries

New insights into solid-state battery production came recently—about nine months after hints dropped by Nissan regarding ⁢its ‍ambitions for⁤ such ⁣technology—a goal ⁢they have pursued since 2021.

Nissan has been discreet about its specifics but mentioned in a November 2021 statement that it intends ‌to launch vehicles powered by proprietary all-solid-state batteries (ASSB) before fiscal year 2028 while⁤ establishing a ‌pilot manufacturing ‍facility ‌in Yokohama as early as fiscal year ⁤2024.

The company believes that their next-generation batteries could potentially decrease charging time significantly—up⁣ to two-thirds—and aim for costs as ⁢low‌ as $75 per kilowatt-hour by the target date of 2028; eventually aspiring towards an ultimate cost around $65/kWh afterwards.

Industry Collaboration on Future Technologies

Meanwhile, SK On is⁣ also vigorously pursuing advancements in ASSB technology and has shared recent updates regarding its research strategies. The company is⁣ working ‌on⁤ two types of solid-state designs: polymer-oxide composite and sulfide-based ⁢technologies—with expectations set ⁤for commercial prototype ⁣launches around 2027 and beyond‍ into 2029 respectively.

An innovative pilot facility ⁤dedicated entirely ‌to solid-state battery development is being constructed at ⁣their R&D center located in Daejeon, South Korea—that facility is projected to reach operational status during the latter half of 2025.

Understanding ‍Solid-State Battery⁤ Innovations

The critical distinction between solid-state batteries and conventional lithium-ion varieties lies primarily within their core structure—the former replaces flammable⁢ liquid electrolytes with either solid⁣ or⁢ semi-solid alternatives. Such shifts present⁣ numerous engineering hurdles; thus industry experts previously anticipated broad market readiness might not occur until post-2030—for now we ⁢see companies like SK On eager to accelerate timelines ahead of expectations.

The timeline linked with‌ this US production contrast suggests starting ⁤operations may coincide ‌closely with when⁤ commercial prototypes are ⁢still being actively developed—notably given manufacturers’ commitments toward internal AASSB projects led by Nissan themselves amid exciting merger possibilities involving Honda too—a significant player nestled within what’s termed “Alliance 2030,” alongside Renault-Mitsubishi motors collaboration initiated several years back focused heavily upon advancing exciting new battery technologies through joint initiatives⁤ stemming principally from Japan itself

Research Collaborations⁢ at Oxford University

Nissan hasn’t operated alone however! Their partnership stretches across international partnerships notably connecting them academically through cutting-edge‍ investigations undertaken at Oxford University—central region ‌Poland
