The Necessity for Urban Air Quality Improvement
Ensuring cleaner air in metropolitan areas is crucial, and mitigating noise pollution should also be a priority. Among the various solutions available, electric buses stand out as an exemplary option to address both concerns simultaneously. In fact, they may represent the most effective strategy for enhancing urban transport systems while fostering eco-friendliness.
Economic Viability of Electric Buses
Electric buses have been economically viable for numerous years, with some locations reporting cost parity with traditional diesel buses regarding total ownership costs over a decade ago. For example, the director of Barcelona’s transit authority noted back in 2013 that BYD’s electric models were competitive against their fossil fuel counterparts based on overall lifecycle expenses. This leads to one clear conclusion: it is quite perplexing that numerous cities have yet to transition their entire bus fleets to electric options.
Ambitious Electrification Plans in India
A notable move towards electrification comes from BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) in Mumbai, which has laid out plans within its 2025–2026 budget to more than double its fleet size while transitioning entirely to electric vehicles by 2027. Presently operating 711 buses, BEST intends to incorporate 8,000 electric units into its lineup—a significant leap forward necessitating the acquisition of around 2,650 new electric buses annually.
BEST’s future plans specifically highlight a dramatic boost in double-decker bus numbers—from the current count of just 50 up to an impressive target of 1,000—aimed at increasing transport capacity on routes observed as overcrowded.
