Acura’s New Electric Frontier: The RSX
This year marks a significant step for Honda as it gears up to produce its first battery electric vehicle (BEV) under the Acura brand—the Acura RSX. Scheduled for production at a newly established EV factory in Ohio, this model will utilize Honda’s innovative ASIMO platform. “The RSX encapsulates what it means to provide an exhilarating driving experience synonymous with the Acura name, making it an ideal choice for our inaugural electric SUV,” stated Lance Woelfer, VP of automobile sales at American Honda Motor Co.
Advancements in Robotics and Software
During CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Honda revealed that the ASIMO operating system (OS), developed internally, represents a modern evolution of the original ASIMO humanoid robot unveiled two decades ago. Since its inception, Honda has continually improved its robotics capabilities which include sophisticated perception of surroundings and autonomous behavior management while being attuned to human interactions. By merging these advancements with cutting-edge AI technologies, Honda aims to deliver software-defined vehicles that reflect unique levels of innovation inherent to the brand.
A Pioneering Software Framework
The ASIMO OS is set to revolutionize vehicle system management by integrating controls across various functionalities such as advanced driver assistance systems and infotainment features. Through over-the-air (OTA) updates, owners can expect continuous enhancements post-purchase tailored specifically to their preferences and needs—fueling a personalized driving experience that elevates enjoyment on every journey.
Real-world Testing Commences
This week marks the start of real-world testing conditions for the fully electric RSX prototype models featuring unique camouflage designed by Acura’s global design team. This camouflage highlights the vehicle’s sleek coupe-like profile through intricate patterns symbolizing tranquility and strength coupled with energy from within. “The return of RSX signifies not only our commitment but also introduces next-generation excitement surrounding fun-to-drive performance,” remarked Mike Langel, assistant vice president at Acura National Sales.
A Nod to History: The Evolution of RSX
The RSX moniker has its roots dating back to 2002 when it was rebranded from a version based on the Honda Integra until 2006. The new compact electric SUV aims indeed smaller than GM’s ZDX built upon their Ultium platform located in Spring Hill factory Tennessee—a shift reflecting current automotive trends towards electrification.
The Vision Behind The Honda EV Hub
The establishment of the $4.4 billion joint venture known as the Honda EV Hub—between Honda and LG Chem—is pivotal for future production strategies within Ohio aimed at blending internal combustion engines with hybrid-electric options alongside BEVs on shared assembly lines effectively transitioning manufacturing principles focused on sustainability while maintaining quality standards ultimately benefitting consumers significantly.
Spearheading Evolutionary Manufacturing Practices
“After establishing American production thirty years ago; we are thrilled that ACURA’s first full-fledged EV product will emerge from this innovative hub,” said executive chief engineer Mike Fischer leading North America’s BEV initiatives further highlighting how this facility paves pathways towards generating class-leading standards globally.” They’re mindful they’ve less than one year left before launching full-scale EV operations.”
Pioneering Infrastructure Developments Underway
Currently under extensive renovation are Marysville Auto Plant amongst others—with prime developments including six high-pressure die-casting machines pioneering mega-casting techniques paving practical pathways into smarter case designs engineered intricately housing vital components such as Intelligent Power Units dedicated specifically operationally optimizing integrated efficiencies reinforcing use cases exemplifying excellence spanning manufacturing domains bespeaking ambition notable interactions between traditional automotive practices infused electrically assorted fabrications.”
