Ten teams have collectively secured $1.5 million as Phase 3 opens for returning contenders.
Recent Developments
Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the winners of Phase 2 in the Re-X Before Recycling Prize—a pioneering initiative aimed at discovering and enhancing innovative techniques to prolong the utility of products through methodologies such as reuse, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, or repurposing before considering recycling (“Re-X”). The projects span various categories—from household items and automotive components to furniture and dining equipment—each designed with a mission to minimize energy consumption throughout their life cycles, cut emissions, bolster circular supply chains, and lessen dependence on new raw materials.
Throughout Phase 2 processes, participants benefited from in-depth evaluations by national laboratories to refine their strategies for implementation within supply chains while fostering relationships with mentors and collaborators to maximize community impact.
“These Phase 2 victors now have the chance to execute their plans that contribute significantly toward cultivating a circular economy,” remarked Chris Saldaña, director of AMMTO. “The results from these Re-X endeavors will enhance regional manufacturing capabilities, boost U.S. material security, generate job opportunities, and alleviate environmental challenges.”
Each recipient of Phase 2 will receive $150K in funding along with up to $100K worth of technical support through collaboration with a DOE national lab. Overall funding available through the Re-X Before Recycling Prize totals $4.5 million alongside an additional $1.1 million earmarked for technical assistance and analytical support from national laboratories.

The Launch of Phase 3
The final phase of this prize is officially open for previous competitors looking to return. This stage involves showcasing significant advancements towards integrating their innovations into viable Re-X supply chains while forming ecosystem partnerships through active community involvement and developing detailed blueprints that ensure continuity beyond the competition period—Phase 3 submissions must be submitted by December 8th at 5 p.m ET in 2025.
Overview
This January marked an important milestone when ten exceptional teams hailing from seven states plus Washington D.C., were recognized as winners for Phase 2: Prepare! within this groundbreaking prize framework concentrating solely on returning candidates during its third phase: Develop!
The inception announcement was made on November 27th in 2023 regarding this three-tier contest focused on nurturing forward-thinking methods that extend product lifespans via reusing some end-of-life products prior to recycling them—a strategy strongly endorsed by leading figures in sustainability dialogues worldwide today.
A Path Towards Sustainability
The initiatives resulting from this award are not merely about promoting private investment but also aim at amplifying innovative approaches associated with circular economies which can ultimately help reduce both emissions produced over lifecycles critically impacting climate change factors connected directly back into enhancing sustainable technologies emerging across clean energy markets while curbing reliance upon newly mined resources significantly—as corroborated recently where data indicates widespread efforts aiming towards net-zero carbon emissions come fully realized by year-end target set forth timely reaching therapeutic velocity globally.
