Meta’s CEO Takes a Jab at Apple: A Closer Look
Apple has been accustomed to receiving critiques, and the latest voice in this ongoing dialogue is none other than Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta. During his appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Zuckerberg expressed his views regarding Apple’s current standing in the tech industry.
The Innovation Debate
Zuckerberg remarked, “It seems like they haven’t introduced any groundbreaking innovations lately. It’s as if Steve Jobs invented the iPhone two decades ago, and now they’re merely coasting.” This assertion comes amidst Apple’s launch of several impressive products in 2024, such as:
- Apple Vision Pro: A revolutionary device that has set a new benchmark in augmented reality technology. Its innovation prompted Meta to expedite their release of the Meta Quest 3 and announce plans for AR glasses with production costs soaring to $10,000.
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation: An advanced model of open-ear earbuds featuring top-notch noise cancellation capabilities priced under $200.
- M4 Mac mini: A reimagined desktop computer design that’s notably more compact than an Apple TV.
This doesn’t even consider additional recent releases such as the ultra-slim iPad Pro, a refreshed iPad Air measuring 13 inches, and new versions of its iconic iPhones. While one might debate whether these updates signal true innovation or just minor improvements—claiming that Apple has been stagnant warrants further scrutiny.

Zuckerberg’s Broader Concerns
Zuckerberg’s critiques seem aimed less at genuine innovation disputes and more at financial motives. For instance, he sought to incorporate Apple’s quick-pairing protocol for AirPods into his Ray-Ban Meta Glasses but met resistance from Apple’s team. He explained their request: “We effectively asked them… ‘Can we utilize your AirPods pairing method to facilitate seamless connectivity for users?’”
This highlights an obvious interest in creating seamless integration between devices—a feature that would undoubtedly benefit Meta Glasses users by avoiding cumbersome Bluetooth connection processes. However, expecting Apple to allow access to proprietary technologies seems rather unrealistic from Zuckerberg’s perspective.
The Encryption Controversy
Zuckerberg also claimed that certain protocols used by Apple remain unencrypted—a statement lacking solid evidence—as well as raising doubts about declining sales figures for iPhones. The reality is quite stark: it’s Facebook itself facing declining user numbers amidst competitive markets.
A Reflection on Innovation Standards
Criticism towards Apple exists within various contexts; however, it hardly pertains to a supposed lack of invention—especially when leveled by someone whose flagship products were predominantly acquisitions rather than homegrown advancements. In fact, one might argue that Meta’s latest venture reflects imitation rather than ingenuity—essentially replicating features found on platforms like Twitter.
