After prolonged anticipation for Tesla’s production plans and amid rising concerns over potential import tariffs from the incoming U.S. administration, the Mexican government is teaming up with private industry partners to create its first local brand of compact electric vehicles.
According to reports by AFP, “On Monday, Mexico unveiled its plans for an affordable electric vehicle designed locally, shortly after Tesla CEO Elon Musk suspended plans for a factory due to tariff threats posed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.” The government indicated that these new vehicles will be produced under a public-private partnership framework and will retail between 90,000 and 150,000 pesos (roughly $4,400 – $7,400).
