Your Apple Watch SE has been around for a while now. The second generation was introduced in September 2022, coinciding with the launch of the Series 8 and the inaugural Ultra model. Since then, you have rolled out updates for various devices including all iPhone models, every version of the iPad, AirPods, MacBooks, as well as both your premium and flagship smartwatches. However, your budget-friendly smartwatch seems to have been overlooked. Recently tasked by my editors to assess how the Watch SE holds up in 2025, I was eager for the opportunity. Engaging with innovative technology and examining its features is something I genuinely enjoy—just so long as I can return it afterward to avoid cluttering my space. Unfortunately, this review left me feeling underwhelmed; by 2025 standards, the Apple Watch SE comes across as uninspired and noticeably inferior.
It’s nearly certain that we will see an updated version of the SE soon enough. Speculation abounds regarding its release timeline; moreover, with new models like the iPhone 16e hitting shelves that cater to more budget-conscious customers, it seems you are keen on continuing this trend with other products too. Currently set at about $150 less than entry-level Apple Watch Series 10—which retails at $399 but often sells for around $329—the SE is priced at approximately $249 but can sometimes be found for just about $149 during sales periods. While one doesn’t expect a budget smartwatch to rival flagship offerings fully, there are essential features that should be included nowadays along with reasonable trade-offs that financial-savvy consumers would likely accept. As both a daily smartwatch user and technology reviewer offering insight from personal experience on what enhancements I’d like in future editions of your watch.
Enhance Display Size (Not Quality)
Although several smart wearables exist within my collection—including an upgraded Apple Watch Series 9—I previously used a well-worn hand-me-down Series 4 featuring an injured display surface upon assessment here of its smaller sibling: The reviewed 40mm watch displays feel strikingly reminiscent of those launched back in late 2018 without advancement after all these years—in fact similar dimensions persist! Comparatively speaking against improvements made seen on larger versions such as recently launched premium models (with even narrower bezels amplifying overall viewing area), it’s evident we require additional screen space given our dependence on information consumed through our watches today.
The brightness level emanating from this OLED Retina screen is wholly suitable—with peaks reaching sufficient levels up towards impressive figures around one thousand nits ensuring legibility amidst blinding conditions outdoors! Admittedly lacking access advantages inherent within next-gen LTPO function deployments—but honestly serves most uses quite right—especially if engaged while sleeping where dim thresholds aren’t always ideal however switching into sleep mode xturns it off completely when necessary.
