Insights into the Pixel 10 Series’ Upcoming Tensor G5 Chipset
A recent analysis from Android Authority sheds light on the forthcoming Pixel 10 series, focusing particularly on its innovative Tensor G5 chipset. This report reinforces earlier speculations, revealing that Google will design this chip with TSMC handling the manufacturing process, marking a shift away from Samsung’s involvement.
Advanced Manufacturing and Architecture
The Tensor G5 will be crafted using TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm-class technology. Emphasizing performance and efficiency, Google has chosen to integrate Arm Cortex CPU cores into its latest offering. Notably, a significant upgrade lies in the GPU selection; for the first time, Google will utilize an Imagination Technologies graphics processor—the IMG DXT—replacing the Arm Mali-G715 MP7 found in its predecessor, the Tensor G4.
Revolutionary Image Signal Processor for Enhanced Photography
A standout feature of this new architecture is its fully customized image signal processor (ISP). Unlike prior models that operated with semi-custom ISPs utilizing altered Samsung designs alongside some proprietary components from Google, this overhaul promises to significantly enhance camera capabilities in Pixel devices. This marks a pivotal development for photo quality since all previous iterations relying solely on Tensor chips lacked a completely unique ISP.
Innovations in Memory Management
In addition to improving camera technology, Google plans to implement an exclusive memory controller alongside system-level cache and advanced power modules within the Tensor G5 hardware framework.
Transitioning Video Codec Support
The newly designed chip will also see a departure from Google’s proprietary “BigWave” AV1 video codec and Samsung’s Multi Format Codec (MFC). Instead, it aims to adopt Chips&Media’s WAVE677DV solution which advances video processing flexibility by supporting multiple formats including AV1, VP9, HEVC, and H.264 encoding and decoding capabilities.
Diverse Connectivity Options
The functionality of the Tensor G5 is further enhanced through collaborations involving third-party USB interfaces as well as PCIe connections. This includes additional components facilitating Display Interface (DSI), DisplayPort connectivity along with advanced flash storage compatibility using LPDDR5x memory technology.
