Apple Expands AirTag Tracking Features for Travelers
In November of the previous year, Apple launched the AirTag Share Item Location feature with iOS 18.2, which subsequently saw wider implementation in collaboration with select leading airlines. Just a couple of months later, American Airlines has officially joined Apple’s Find My network, making it the latest airline to facilitate tracking for misplaced and delayed luggage via AirTags.
American Airlines Enhances Lost Baggage Solution
The introduction of Share Item Location by American Airlines allows passengers who experience lost or delayed baggage—equipped with an AirTag—to generate a shareable link. This feature grants the airline temporary access to track the AirTag’s location, significantly accelerating the search and recovery process for luggage. Once the item is recovered, this link becomes inactive automatically cutting off access to its whereabouts.
This development is particularly significant as American Airlines has consistently transported more passengers than any other carrier in recent years, despite only being ranked third in fleet size within the United States.
How to Track Your Baggage with American Airlines
The procedures for recovering lost baggage can differ among airlines. For travelers flying with American Airlines, it all begins by scanning a QR code located at either their baggage office or claim area. Furthermore, detailed instructions are available on their official website to guide passengers through each step of the process if additional help is needed.
A Growing List of Participating Airlines
American Airlines’ support joins an expanding roster of carriers utilizing Apple’s AirTag Share Item Location functionality. Recently announced partnerships include Lufthansa Group and Virgin Atlantic; Lufthansa endorses this capability across its subsidiary airlines such as Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, and Eurowings.
