Transforming Voice Interaction: My Journey with Evolving Technology
I must admit something: despite having spent a technology/” title=”Revolutionizing Fiber Recycling: Epson and HKRITA Join Forces to Develop Innovative Dry Fiber Technology”>significant amount of my career as a technology journalist eager to dive into the latest gadgets, I’ve never found voice assistants to be consistently effective or beneficial for my day-to-day needs.
The Early Struggles with Voice Technology
This sentiment primarily stemmed from the limitations in the technology itself. Siri, introduced by Apple in 2011, was a groundbreaking step at that time. However, it didn’t take long for users to encounter frustration. The arrival of Amazon Echo along with Alexa in 2014 offered another choice, yet even as I engaged with both platforms intensely during initial trials, I found myself abandoning them within weeks due to ongoing issues. Conversations felt cumbersome; I often had to prepare before speaking or repeat my instructions multiple times.
I’ve certainly not been alone in this experience. Over the past decade, numerous critiques have emerged detailing the early failures of these predominant voice assistants.
The Game-Changer: OpenAI’s ChatGPT
Then came OpenAI’s innovative leap with ChatGPT and its Advanced Voice Mode feature initiated back in September 2024 after much anticipation. This mode has garnered praise from AI enthusiasts who laud it for its ability to navigate web information fluidly and engage in full conversations while also analyzing images provided by users — mimicking natural human dialogue remarkably well.
An Innovative Mapping Solution
Recently, Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, shared insights on X (formerly Twitter) that highlighted an exciting integration: newer versions of Apple’s iPhone can now link their Action Button directly to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode—allowing quick access at just a push.
I already utilized Advanced Voice Mode through one of my customizable iPhone Lock Screen widgets—though this still required me to look down at my device every time I wanted access.
Easier Activation via Action Button
Mapping the Advanced Voice Mode functionality onto the physical Action Button—a small button on the left side above volume controls—appears significantly more user-friendly since it allows activation by feel alone. After setting this up myself recently, I’m optimistic this will encourage more frequent use of what is undoubtedly impressive technology. Here’s how you can set it up:
- The feature is available on recent models such as:
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 series (including Plus and Pro models)
If you’re starting fresh with one of these newer models running iOS 18 or later operating system versions during setup, your device should present an option regarding how you’d like to configure your Action Button default settings—initially set for silencing ringer notifications.
No need for concern if you’ve already completed setup without utilizing this feature; there are still options available!
Utilizing the ChatGPT iOS App: A Step-by-Step Guide
To begin your journey with the ChatGPT iOS app, first, download it from the App Store through this link. The app is accessible to all users, including those utilizing the free version; however, keep in mind that limitations exist on how often they can utilize Advanced Voice Mode each month. Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu plans (starting at $20 per month) benefit from significantly higher or even unlimited usage of this feature.
Once you have successfully installed the ChatGPT application on your iPhone, follow these steps to enhance your experience.
Step 1: Accessing Settings for Action Button Configuration
Begin by selecting the “Settings” icon represented by a gear on your main screen. Scroll down until you reach a section after “General” and “Accessibility,” where you will find an option labeled “Action Button.” Click on it to proceed.
Navigating Action Button Features
This action opens up options for configuring what happens when you press the Action Button. You’ll now see a screen that allows you to browse different functionalities available for assignment.
Step 2: Selection of Actions for Your Shortcut
Scroll left through various options using swipes until reaching an option designated as “Shortcut.” Depending on your settings and previous selections, this might appear as one of several screens—mine was located towards the ninth position.

Activating Your Setup
With your setup complete, exit out of Settings by swiping up. Now it’s time for some hands-free operation! Long press on your physical action button; this should launch an Advanced Voice Mode interface featuring a blue circle indicating that it’s ready for voice input. As soon as you notice this circle, feel free to start speaking—you’re good to go!
This simple configuration allows for quick access and interactive conversations through ChatGPT without needing traditional text entry methods, enhancing both convenience and usability on your device.
