# Anticipated Updates for Apple’s iPad Lineup
The majority of Apple’s iPad collection received significant enhancements last year, but the basic model has been left behind yet again. The current 10th-generation iPad was released in October 2022 and is in urgent need of a revision.
## Upcoming Upgrades
Recent reports indicate that an update is on the horizon. Given that it has been over two years since the last iteration, a substantial increase in processing capability can be anticipated for the upcoming 11th generation—without any changes to its external design, but with notable advancements in internal components.
According to industry insider Mark Gurman, the new models are internally designated as J481 and J482. In comparison, Apple referred to the existing 10th-gen version as J272 during its development.
## Enhancing Processing Power
The spec enhancements for the 11th-generation iPad will parallel a similar upgrade expected for the upcoming spring release of the iPhone SE. This initiative plays a crucial role in Apple’s strategy to broaden its Artificial Intelligence (AI) user base: by making these platforms more mainstream, Apple seeks to enhance brand awareness and collect valuable training data. Consequently, it’s logical that their entry-level offerings—the ones most consumers purchase—would also support AI functionality even if this necessitates more extensive hardware improvements than usual.
In addition to launching an upgraded version of its base model, Apple plans to introduce new iterations of the iPad Air during spring 2025. These new models will likely share physical similarities with their predecessors from 2024 while focusing on increased specifications. Gurman suggests there’s a possibility that these updated versions may transition from utilizing an M2 chip to incorporating an M4 processor—similarizing them further with higher-end offerings like the iPad Pro.
## A Competitive Landscape
This insight about upgrading chipsets is intriguing because Gurman believes that we might not see updates for the iPad Pro’s M5 chipset until late 2025 or early 2026. This scenario could lead to a unique situation where both Air and Pro models operate on nearly identical technology for up to a year—a rare occurrence within Apple’s product lineup.
## Future Announcements Uncertain
It remains unclear whether these forthcoming updates—including those related to both new hardware products like the next iPhone SE and updated iPads—will be unveiled at a dedicated spring event or announced quietly through press releases instead. While previous spring events occurred in both 2024 and 2022, there was no equivalent presentation held in March of this year; therefore, only time will reveal how Apple chooses to make these announcements regarding their exciting lineups.
