With the recent launch of the Rugged SSD Pro5, LaCie positions itself as a pioneer in Thunderbolt 5 technology. We had the opportunity to test it alongside the latest offerings from Apple in our studio.
This innovative portable storage solution was showcased at CES 2025 and quickly became available for pre-order soon after.
Apple promptly embraced Thunderbolt 5, equipping its new MacBook Pro and Mac mini models to support this advancement. We utilized a Mac mini for our testing purposes.
Given our high demand for video and photo storage due to extensive content creation, we continually seek versatile storage options. Seagate’s LaCie has consistently been among our preferred brands.
The Rugged SSD Pro5 is available in two capacities: 2TB and 4TB; during our review process, we focused on the 2TB variant.
LaCie’s Rugged SSD Pro5 Review: Design Overview
Upon initial inspection, this device resembles previous models from LaCie’s Rugged series. Although there have been notable changes in form factor over time, they have maintained their recognizable design ethos throughout.
Previously styled like robust metal boxes protected by rubber bumpers, recent iterations now fully utilize NVMe technology encased entirely in silicone—eliminating any exposed metal components altogether.
Contrasting with USB-C Models
When compared to its predecessor that employed USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 technologies, you’ll find little distinction beyond an attractive new blue finish—though many might miss the classic orange color due to its tendency not to show dirt as much as blue does.
The drive features LaCie’s logo prominently displayed on top alongside smooth edges that fit comfortably within your hand’s grasp. The bottom side includes serial numbers, regulatory information and how it bears Neil Poulton’s design signature stamped into it.
A Closer Look at Ports
While visually similar—to be honest—the newer version offers enhanced durability features. It boasts increased resistance ratings transitioning from IP67 up through IP68 standards.
