Sony Semiconductor Achieves Milestone with 20 Billion Image Sensors Shipped
Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing, renowned for its production of image sensors utilized in smartphone cameras, recently announced a remarkable achievement: they have shipped 20 billion image sensors since the introduction of transistor manufacturing in the 1980s.
Mobile Devices Drive Rapid Growth
In an interview with Nikkei Asia, President Yoshihiro Yamaguchi attributed this impressive figure to the surge in mobile device usage. Notably, the number of shipped sensors skyrocketed from 10 billion to 20 billion in just five years—from 2019 to 2024.
Increasing Complexity of Smartphone Cameras
The rapid increase in shipments can be largely attributed to the growing complexity and number of cameras integrated into smartphones. Beginning with dual-camera setups introduced around 2016 and 2017, many current models now feature up to four cameras—offering advanced photographic capabilities across various price points.
Expanding Manufacturing Operations
The semiconductor segment operates three key manufacturing facilities located in Kumamoto, Nagasaki, and Oita. While both Nagasaki and Oita focus on developing imaging signal processors (ISPs) specifically for mobile applications, Sony Semiconductor is actively exploring opportunities beyond smartphones. The company aims to supply sensors for automotive technologies, smart factories, intelligent ICT cameras, laser systems, and data center applications.
