Sonos Cancels Streaming Device Development
!significantly advanced in its development, yet the company has chosen to abandon the project altogether.
Setback for Future Product Launches
Originally anticipated as Sonos’ next revolutionary hardware venture, the streaming device known by the code name Pinewood was set for launch in late 2025. Unfortunately, according to reports from The Verge, Sonos’ leadership has confirmed that there are currently no major product releases slated for the latter half of 2025. Despite Pinewood being at an advanced development stage and undergoing internal beta testing, it will not see the light of day.
The device was designed to run an operating system developed by The Trade Desk and would have included HDMI passthrough capabilities suitable for gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, and other multimedia devices. Additionally, it promised seamless integration with existing Sonos speakers to enhance users’ audio experiences with immersive surround sound technology.
A Shift in Focus Towards Software Enhancement
In place of launching Pinewood, Sonos management is pivoting their efforts towards enhancing their software ecosystem. The team previously dedicated to developing the streaming device will be reassigned to focus on other initiatives within the organization.
Earlier this year marked significant changes within Sonos’ leadership landscape when CEO Patrick Spence stepped down amid ongoing complications related to app functionality. Reports from February also indicated that plans for a MagSafe-compatible speaker intended for iPhone users were scrapped due to technical challenges—highlighting ongoing struggles within their product development pipeline.
Looking Ahead
As plans evolve at Sonos amidst these alterations in strategy and company structure, stakeholders await more information regarding future products while hoping that improvements on existing software platforms lead to better user experiences across their product lineup.
