Pioneering Green Corridor: Baleària’s Electric Ferry Initiative
Launch of a Sustainable Maritime Link
Baleària, an esteemed ferry service based in Spain, is set to unveil an innovative model aimed at establishing the inaugural green corridor between Spain and Morocco. This route will be serviced by two high-speed vessels that are entirely electric and produce zero emissions. The fast ferries will offer a vital connection between Tarifa in Spain and Tangier in Morocco, showcasing what is being promoted as the “most environmentally friendly” maritime passageway connecting Europe and Africa.
Advanced Shipbuilding Techniques at Armon Shipyard
The construction of these twin catamarans will commence over the forthcoming two-and-a-half years at the Armon shipyard located in Gijón. Each ferry will be equipped with four battery-driven electric propulsion units that yield a combined power output of 16 MW. Their substantial battery capacity of 11,500 kWh facilitates a complete journey covering 18 nautical miles while maintaining an eco-friendly profile.
Specifications for Optimal Travel
The vessels are designed with impressive dimensions—a beam width reaching 25 meters—allowing them to accommodate up to 804 passengers along with space for approximately 225 vehicles. Remarkably, they can achieve speeds up to 26 knots.
Efficient Energy Requirements
A typical trip between Tarifa and Tangier requires about 8 MWh for optimal speed travel, necessitating batteries with a gross capacity of around 11.5 MWh for each vessel (image courtesy of Baleària). Within each hour-long port stopover, it is critical that these ferries recharge fully; this process involves integrating an additional gross power supply of around 8 MWh across both ports—comprising shore connections totaling approximately 5 MW in Tarifa and about 8 MW in Tangier.
A Historic Shift Towards Decarbonization
This groundbreaking venture has been endorsed by Adolfo Utor, President and Owner of Baleària: “This initiative represents not only technological advancement but also serves as the first instance where we can accomplish this route utilizing solely electric energy resulting in zero emissions,” explained Utor. He emphasized that their advanced recharge technology enables batteries essential for journeys to recharge within just about forty minutes.
Contracting Authority: Algeciras Bay Port Authority (APBA)
The Algeciras Bay Port Authority officially entrusted Baleària with operating the Tarifa-Tangier Ville line for the upcoming fifteen years as confirmed last December. In creating this first-ever intercontinental green pathway, technical excellence alongside environmental standards was given paramount importance during contract execution.
A Commitment Beyond Transportation Emissions
“The voyages on this route will achieve full decarbonization meeting future goals set for sustainability predicted beyond as far away as 2050,” stated Utor underlining further benefits brought forth through electrification such as reduced noise pollution and minimized vibrations associated typically found with diesel engines.
This initiative functions through collaboration among various distinguished enterprises across engineering sectors alongside energy providers like Cotenaval, Endesa, Amendis and Incat Crowther ensuring robust involvement from national stakeholders looking towards fostering sustainable transport solutions together.”
Cultural Connectivity Between Two Nations
Baleària envisions its new route serving not just economic purposes but also reinforcing historical ties between two nations—the ferry company describes it akin “to establishing green lifelines uniting countries sharing profound cultural affiliations.” Additionally aimed at stimulating local jobs markets driven from enhanced opportunities derived via increased accessibility routes linking vastly significant communities together fostering growth locally.”
Sustainability Goals Supported By Local Government Leaders
The Secretary General José Antonio Santano expresses enthusiasm regarding initiatives aligned closely under Ministry’s Transport Strategy prioritizing decarbonization efforts moving forward recognizing intensive effort exerted throughout launching innovative measures firmly rooted among fleets now transitioning towards greener horizons seamlessly aligning long-term objectives set within future visions collectively shaping modern transportation landscapes.”
