### Major Advancements in Zero Emission Freight: New Charging Hubs Unveiled
On March 6, Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood delivered significant updates during the ZEHID progress summit held in London, outlining ambitious plans for the future of zero-emission heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).
### Introduction of 54 New Charging Stations
The initiative aims to introduce 54 new charging hubs across the UK to facilitate electric and hydrogen-powered lorries. This development is part of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrations (ZEHID) program, a collaborative effort between Innovate UK and the Department of Transport. The goal is to revolutionize freight transportation throughout the country.
### Empowering Businesses with Strategic Infrastructure
At this assembly attended by over 400 industry professionals, Greenwood emphasized that these new charging stations represent more than just isolated locations—they are integral components of a comprehensive national network. “Our mission is to guarantee that transitioning to zero-emission methods is not merely feasible but also achievable,” she remarked during her keynote speech.
The infrastructure will span various critical regions across the UK, including depots and major highways, ensuring convenient access for transport operators. A detailed map illustrating all proposed hub locations has been made available for public viewing.
### Building Confidence in Investment Decisions
Greenwood continued her address by highlighting how this initiative will instill confidence among businesses contemplating investments in zero-emission technologies. She stated: “When operators invest in eco-friendly HGVs, they need assurance that supporting infrastructure will be accessible. As we roll out more sites over time, that assurance will only deepen—simplifying decisions for companies ready to adopt greener practices.”
Each hub aligns with one of four primary collaborations within the ZEHID program: eFREIGHT2030, Project Electric Freightway, ZENFreight, and HyHAUL.

Simon Buckley from Innovate UK’s Zero Emission Mobility division noted that establishing these new charging hubs represents a pivotal shift for the UK’s freight sector.
“By carefully positioning these stations nationwide,” Buckley said,
“we’re tackling one of the most significant challenges related to adopting zero-emission HGVs—accessibility to dependable infrastructure. This project not only speeds up our transition toward cleaner transportation solutions but also fortifies supply chain resilience so businesses can operate sustainably without sacrificing efficiency.”
