Pioneering Collaboration Behind the Engine’s Creation
The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), operating under South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT, has announced a monumental achievement: the creation of the first-ever engine capable of directly injecting ammonia into its combustion chamber at high pressures. This endeavor was made possible through collaboration with Hyundai Motor’s Electrification Engineering Center.
Technology Innovations Addressing Fuel Challenges
This advanced engine employs high-pressure liquid injection techniques designed to tackle common issues associated with gaseous ammonia fuels—namely inconsistent power output and potential emissions problems. The system guarantees a steady supply of abundant ammonia fuel while using pure ammonia to achieve remarkable specific output without needing extra combustion aids or additives.
Performance Enhancements for Efficiency
The team enhanced performance by refining both the ignition mechanism and optimizing fuel injection timings along with valve operations. In addition, they created an exclusive after-treatment system to significantly reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) as well as unburned ammonia emissions. These innovations led to notable improvements in thermal efficiency coupled with increased power output while massively curbing harmful emissions—a clear indicator that ammonia can serve as an efficient alternative fuel across various uses.
