Thanks to its SOS feature, the Apple Watch played a pivotal role in rescuing injured skiers in Washington who fell about 1,000 feet down a mountainside.
On Wednesday, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office received an SOS alert from an Apple Watch. This notification originated from a skier near Steven’s Pass, which is well-known as a popular ski destination.
Rescuers had little information other than the fact that there was an incident involving a skier who sustained leg injuries. Reports indicate that this individual tumbled approximately 1,000 feet during their fall, according to Fox Weather.
The King County Sheriff’s Air Support Unit was deployed and arrived shortly after sunset. Footage captured during the mission shows infrared technology being utilized to locate the injured skiers before dispatching one of their rescuers down to assist them.
Following initial medical evaluation on-site, the injured skier was lifted into the helicopter for immediate evacuation and further treatment.
Upon descent by one crew member, it became evident that another skier had suffered significant knee damage that incapacitated them from walking. Consequently, all involved skiers were hoisted up and safely flown down from the mountain area.
Details concerning the condition of those impacted have yet to be disclosed.

While specifics around what triggered assistance remain ambiguous—especially given limited information available at such remote locations—the possibility exists that Emergency SOS via Satellite may have been employed here. In regions devoid of cellular signals or Internet connectivity capabilities found on newer iPhone models allows users experiencing crises to send crucial abbreviated messages through satellite channels effortlessly facilitated through guided prompts under low bandwidth constraints aimed at relaying essential details effectively.
