Although the release of the iPhone 17 series is still set for more than eight months from now, speculation about the iPhone 18 modelsanticipated next year has already started to circulate.
According to a report from Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, Samsung is in the process of creating an innovative three-layer stacked camera sensor intended for use in the iPhone 18. This advanced imaging technology promises to enhance responsiveness while minimizing image noise and broadening dynamic range among other enhancements.
The technology is referred to as “PD-TR-Logic,” a term used to describe a camera sensor that incorporates three circuits layered onto its surface. A well-known leaker operating under the name “Jukanlosreve” initially disclosed Samsung’s plans for this sensor last week.
Sony has historically been Apple’s sole supplier of camera sensors for iPhones; hence Samsung’s entry into this market would be significant.
Notably, Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted back in July that Samsung could start supplying Apple with ultra-wide camera sensors boasting a resolution of up to 48 megapixels by as soon as early 2026 — coinciding with the expected launch of the iPhone 18 series. Whether or not this new sensor will be applicable for other cameras in the lineup such as Fusion or Telephoto remains uncertain; its use may also be exclusive to higher-end models like those within the Pro category.
With various sources indicating that Samsung is on track to become an official supplier of lenses for Apple’s mobile devices, these rumors hold considerable weight. However, since there are still over eighteen months before any potential launches occur regarding the iPhone 18s, details may evolve over time.
