Users of iOS 18.4 are likely to be compelled to transition to the latest HomeKit framework.
Apple is preparing to phase out support for its legacy HomeKit architecture, necessitating upgrades for users when iOS 18.4 is released.
On Monday, Apple introduced the third developer beta of its upcoming iOS 18.4. While there are no noticeable changes in the user interface at this stage, hidden within the code is a potential overhaul that could significantly impact users utilizing the Apple Home application.
In November 2022, with the unveiling of iOS 16.2, Apple rolled out a revamped version of their HomeKit architecture which provided enhanced speed and improved performance for accessories connected via HomeKit. Despite these advancements, some users experienced issues leading Apple to retract this update in December and then reintroduce it in February 2023 alongside iOS 16.4.
Initially optional, many users resisted upgrading their systems in order to maintain compatibility with existing smart home devices; however, as reported by 9to5mac, recent findings from the latest beta indicate that Apple may soon require all users to adopt the new HomeKit structure.
Specifically, updates within this version reveal new prompts alerting users about an impending “update now if you want uninterrupted service,” indicating that support for older versions will be phased out shortly thereafter. This suggests that most users will eventually need to embrace new architectural features or risk rendering older smart home gadgets ineffective.
This significant shift may coincide with public release plans for iOS 18.4 slated for April this year. While enhancements such as updates for Siri have been put on hold temporarily, consumers can anticipate various other impactful changes included in this release—such as an app dedicated specifically for Apple Vision Pro and a selection of newly designed emoji characters among others.
