Unveiling Skin Deep: Blendo Games’ Bold New Adventure
Blendo Games is set to release its newest creation, Skin Deep, on April 30, after an ambitious seven-year development journey. This first-person sci-fi shooter breaks conventional molds—steering clear of the typical epic space dramas and skill-based realism that saturate the genre.
A Futuristic Setting with a Twist
The game unfolds aboard a high-tech cargo starship operated by an insurance firm and stocked with precious artifacts from its clientele. You step into the shoes of a cryogenically preserved security officer, essential for maintaining order should disaster strike. Following an unexpected assault by space marauders, your slumber ends, launching you into a chaotic blend of shooting, stealthy maneuvers, subterfuge, and yes—there’s even a uniquely integral olfactory component—all showcased through Blendo’s distinctively stylized 3D graphics.
Gameplay Mechanics: Comedy Meets Strategy
Skin Deep promises an engaging mixture of brain-teasing puzzles alongside outrageous comedic moments interspersed with action-packed sequences. Players will encounter not only traditional gunplay but also quirky features like sneezing and scent dynamics that leave aromatic plumes in your path—subtle indicators that could betray your presence to lurking pirates. Picture this scenario as akin to navigating a humorous odyssey in contrast to more serious titles; you’ll find yourself saving adorable cats dressed as cowboys scattered throughout the ship!
The game’s scent mechanics operate within context: for example, when players exit via the ship’s trash shoot amidst refuse like fish bones and other culinary leftovers; their fragrant footprints dissipate once they clean themselves up. Sneezing functions similarly within this whimsical narrative framework.

A New Direction in Gameplay
This title marks Blendo’s most action-oriented venture yet under indie developer Brendon Chung’s leadership—a studio renowned for critically acclaimed projects such as Quadrilateral Cowboy and Gravity Bone which often highlight intelligent puzzles mixed with polygonal charm. Notably Skin Deep is their inaugural attempt at integrating first-person shooter elements.
Despite this shift towards FPS gameplay being relatively fresh territory for external audiences, it is not novel for Chung himself; he launched his career customizing levels across various iconic shooters including Doom and Quake series during his youth while maintaining enthusiasm about these genres throughout his gaming life. Interestingly enough, he’s employing idTech4—the modified engine from id Software’s Doom 3—to bring Skin Deep to life.

A Journey Through Development
Reflecting on discussions from four years ago regarding timelines reminiscent of predecessors like Quadrilateral Cowboy—which was notably lengthy—the insight was met with reluctance from Chung initially hoping it would be less than four years long; however today there’s humorously added acknowledgment regarding time management along side development beginning back in July 2018 according to updates presented previously on their FAQ page.
