OnePlus Delays Launch of Open 2 Foldable Device
In October 2023, OnePlus unveiled its inaugural foldable smartphone, the OnePlus Open. This device essentially serves as a global edition of the Oppo Find N3, which debuted concurrently in China. With the imminent introduction of the Oppo Find N5 set for next week in China, many anticipated that OnePlus would soon follow suit with an international version dubbed the Open 2. However, those expectations have shifted considerably.
Strategic Pause for Innovation
Vale G., Product Manager for OnePlus Open, announced that plans for launching the Open 2 will be placed on indefinite hold this year. He stated that OnePlus is currently ”recalibrating for innovation,” though specific details about what this entails remain undisclosed. This announcement does not signify an exit from the foldable market; instead, it reflects a strategic decision to refrain from releasing new models within this timeframe.
“At OnePlus, we are deeply committed to pushing boundaries and innovating across all our product lines,” Vale G. remarked in his statement. “After thorough consideration about timing and our forthcoming initiatives in foldables, we’ve decided to defer any launches until next year.” While some may view this decision as unexpected, Vale emphasized that it’s aligned with their long-term vision.
Commitment to Continuous Development
The recent announcement reassures existing users of the OnePlus Open that they will continue to receive ongoing software updates and critical security enhancements throughout this period. The postponement also suggests that we might see the Oppo Find N5 launched internationally beyond Chinese borders.
“As OPPO leads in foldable technology through its Find N5 release,” Vale added, “we’re devoted to crafting products designed to redefine entire categories while delivering innovative experiences that resonate with our ‘Never Settle’ philosophy.”
