AEMT Achieves Carbon Neutral Certification: A Milestone in Climate Action
Commitment to Sustainability
The Association of Electrical and Mechanical Trades (AEMT) has recently accomplished the remarkable feat of becoming a CAFA Certified Carbon Neutral Association. This designation was earned through meticulous measurement, reporting, and offsetting of its carbon emissions over the span of 2023, alongside implementing transparent and scientifically grounded strategies aimed at further reducing its environmental impact.
The Role of CAFA in Promoting Environmental Responsibility
CAFA (Climate Action for Associations) operates as a non-profit entity dedicated to assisting associations in embedding climate action within their operational frameworks while extending sustainable practices to their members.
Strategic Initiatives for Emission Reduction
With guidance from CAFA, the AEMT has established a Net Zero working group tasked with devising and directing an effective strategy for emissions reduction that benefits both association members and their clientele. Initiatives undertaken include conducting surveys among employees and suppliers to evaluate Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Additionally, the organization is pioneering online training formats intended to lower carbon footprints as well as streamlining face-to-face training sessions to minimize travel-related impacts.
Offsetting Remaining Emissions with Leading Programs
The association is actively addressing any remaining emissions by investing in offsetting programs that comply with stringent standards such as Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) alongside Gold Standard Voluntary Emission Reductions (VER). To account for potential discrepancies, AEMT has opted to double its estimated carbon offsets.
Acknowledgment from Leadership
“Our entire team at AEMT takes immense pride in achieving Certified Carbon Neutral Association status,” commented Thomas Marks, General Manager and Secretary at AEMT. “The electromechanical equipment maintenance sector plays an integral part in advancing the circular economy—a crucial aspect towards diminishing global carbon outputs. Our commitment lies not only in representing our field but also driving it toward responsible growth.”
Support Mechanisms for Members’ Progress toward Carbon Neutrality
“It is essential that we empower our members on their journey toward achieving carbon neutrality while assisting them in identifying potential opportunities within their own operations,” Marks continued. ”To facilitate this process, we plan on nurturing ambassadors within our membership who will provide insights and resources designed to help other associates realize tangible emission savings.”
A Roadmap Toward Ongoing Improvement
The strides already made by AEMT mark just the beginning of an ongoing mission; Marks emphasizes: “We recognize there are further actions we can implement regarding our own greenhouse gas outputs. However, untapped potential exists among our member organizations and their partners—this excites me greatly regarding what we can collectively achieve!”
