Apple’s Ambitious Shift to In-House Wireless Technology
Apple is poised to transform the wireless landscape of its devices by transitioning from Broadcom’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips to a custom-designedchip. As reported by Bloomberg, this endeavor has been in development for a number of years, with plans to begin integrating these proprietary chips into products as early as 2025.
A New Era for Apple’s Connectivity Solutions
The forthcoming chip will function independently from Apple’s planned cellular 5G modem, which aims to replace Qualcomm’s components. However, both initiatives are being designed with the intention of forming a cohesive wireless ecosystem that prioritizes enhanced energy efficiency.
Anticipated Launch in Popular Devices
The new chip, codenamed Proxima, is expected to debut in upgraded versions of the HomePod Mini and Apple TV. Additionally, it should also make its way into the iPhone 17 later in the year. Reports indicate that Mac computers will start receiving this innovative chip beginning in 2026.
Still Room for Improvement?
While Apple may not fully match all technical specifications currently offered by Broadcom—according to sources quoted by Bloomberg—the new Proxima chip will support Wi-Fi 6E functionality. It’s important to note that if it lacks compatibility with Wi-Fi 7, it could diverge from this year’s iPhones that already accommodate that advanced standard.
