Apple TV+ Faces Complete Oscar Exclusion This Year
Apple TV+ will not be contending for any Academy Awards this year, as revealed by the latest nominations released on Thursday which saw the platform miss out completely.
Missed Opportunities: Oscar Contenders Overlooked
Despite some standout films—like Fancy Dance and Blitz—that had the potential to become frontrunners, Apple Original Films received no nominations from the Academy.
While Apple TV+ is recognized for its diverse array of series across multiple genres that frequently achieve high ratings and Emmy recognition, its film production often remains under the radar. New television shows debut frequently, whereas apple-tv-your-ultimate-guide-to-must-watch-originals/” title=”Unlock the Magic of Apple TV+: Your Ultimate Guide to Must-Watch Originals!”>film releases are more sparse each year.
In prior years, however, certain titles have caught the attention of Oscar voters. For instance, Martin Scorsese’s epic Killers of the Flower Moon garnered an impressive ten nominations last year—including Best Picture—and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon racked up three nods as well.
A Dry Spell in 2025
Yet this year marks a disappointing absence for Apple Originals at the Oscars with not a single nomination logged in 2025. This development is somewhat disheartening for a company keenly focused on acquiring accolades such as Oscars and Emmys. As highlighted in their recent press communications: “To date, Apple Original films and series have received 537 awards and accumulated 2,545 nominations.” However, these numbers remain stagnant following this year’s announcements.
Films with Promise but No Nominations
A few releases from Apple were expected to vie for Oscar attention. While The Instigators—a lighthearted comedy featuring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck—was unlikely to attract Academy notice, Fancy Dance starring Lily Gladstone appeared poised to earn at least one nod. Gladstone had previously won numerous accolades for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon; thus some anticipated her newest project would follow suit based on critical acclaim.
Likewise, Steve McQueen’s WWII film Blitz seemed like a solid candidate worthy of recognition—but it too ended up overlooked when nominations were revealed.
The Competition Heats Up
In contrast to Apple’s snubbed entries, Emilia Pérez—a provocative musical about a drug cartel leader staging his death for gender transition—garnered thirteen nominations including Best Picture. Additionally impressive was Wicked alongside The Brutalist; both secured ten nominations each vying fiercely for recognition this awarding season. A comprehensive list can be accessed via the Academy’s official announcement.
