A TikTok clip demonstrating this oddity surfaced just last week, prompting a wave of similar anecdotes from users experiencing the same problem. Although The New York Times successfully replicated this phenomenon in their testing, editors at Macworld claimed they had not encountered it.
Apple’s Response and Investigation Insights
In response to these revelations, Apple explained that this issue stems from what it describes as “phonetic overlap between both terms.” They acknowledged awareness of the problem and indicated that efforts are underway to implement a resolution. However, critics find this explanation hard to believe because phonetically speaking, these words do not closely resemble one another—and there are certainly other terms that would be more appropriate for such automated corrections. Moreover, the reversion of text makes Apple’s reasoning seem insufficient.
John Burkey, a former AI developer who played a role in Siri’s development and maintains connections with his previous team members at Apple, offered insight into the situation. He suggested that this glitch may have originated following an update to Apple’s AI infrastructure. Burkey implied that since the text correction seems intentional—shifting back to “Racist” instead of simply remaining on “Trump”—this indicates potential manipulations either within training data or coding practices rather than just errant programming.
