WhatsApp Expands Payment Features for Indian Users
India stands as WhatsApp’s most significant market, boasting a remarkable user base exceeding 500 million. One of the upcoming features currently in development will enable users to settle their bills directly through WhatsApp, eliminating the need for additional services.
New Payment Functionality Discovered
This exciting feature has been unveiled through an analysis of the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, revealing various bill payment options embedded within its code. The payments are expected to cover essential services such as electricity bills, mobile prepaid top-ups, LPG gas payments, water bills, landline postpaid charges, and even rent payments. Notably, this list could expand further either before or shortly after the feature launches.

At present, WhatsApp allows Indian users to transfer money to friends or family and facilitate payments to businesses via Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The introduction of a bill payment system represents a significant expansion of these capabilities. An Unlocked User Base
Recently, India’s National Payments Corporation removed restrictions on onboarding new users for WhatsApp Pay—this decision allows all 500+ million Indian users access to financial services offered by the platform. The anticipated bill payment feature likely forms part of an overarching initiative intended to encourage greater adoption of WhatsApp Pay among consumers.
