The Launch of the World’s Largest Wind-Powered Cargo Vessel
On Friday, a landmark moment in sustainable shipping occurred as Turkey unveiled the longest wind-powered cargo vessel globally. This innovative ship presents an exciting method to significantly reduce carbon emissions within the freight industry.
Specifications and Capabilities of the Neoliner Origin
The Neoliner Origin, measuring 136 meters (approximately 450 feet) in length, was launched at Tuzla’s port and will enter a fitting-out phase set for six months. Created by French firm Neoline and constructed at RMK Marine shipyard in Turkey, this vessel boasts a remarkable capacity of transporting 5,300 metric tons over extensive journeys due to its dual-mast system and expansive sail area totaling 3,000 square meters.
Environmental Impact: A Greener Alternative
“By harnessing wind power and reducing our cruising speed from 15 knots (around 30 kilometers or roughly 18 miles per hour) to just 11 knots, we can achieve a fivefold reduction in fuel usage and emissions compared to traditional cargo vessels,” explained Jean Zanuttini, president of Nantes-based Neoline.
The International Maritime Organization states that approximately three percent of global greenhouse gas emissions stem from sea transport, which accounts for nearly 90 percent of worldwide trade activity.
Future Voyages
The maiden voyage is scheduled for summer 2025 when the ship will depart Turkey en route to Saint-Nazaire on France’s Atlantic coast. Following this journey, it is set to commence its inaugural route toward North America—covering stops such as Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon in France’s overseas territories along with ports in Baltimore (USA) and Halifax (Canada).
Support From Stakeholders
This ambitious project has garnered financial backing from France’s public investment bank (BPI), as well as support from CMA-CGM—a prominent French shipping enterprise. Furthermore, plans are underway for constructing an additional vessel akin to the Neoliner Origin shortly after fulfilling initial requirements.
