The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the U.S. Department of Energy warns that without effective interventions, data centers could consume as much as 9% of America’s total electricity output by 2030. Researchers at NREL are investigating underground thermal energy storage systems as a method to mitigate cooling needs during peak usage times—a strategy that not only conserves water but also boosts energy efficiency.

Traditional cooling mechanisms in data centers involve either air conditioning large server cabinets or employing water-cooled fan coils—methods that collectively can account for around 40% of a data center’s total energy consumption. Peak demand during extreme heat events further strains this system, creating significant costs for the nation’s electric grid.
NREL is particularly focused on Cold Underground Thermal Energy Storage (Cold UTES) systems as a viable solution for limiting peak load demands while encouraging reduced reliance on new gas power plants and other supplementary infrastructure.

On January 17, NREL detailed its vision for Cold UTES technology over three decades through economic modeling studies aimed at showcasing its long-term benefits and commercial viability specifically suited for data centers.
