Android and the Qi2 Wireless Charging Standard: A Missed Opportunity
In recent years, Android smartphones have led the way in numerous technological advancements. They were pioneers in adopting cutting-edge features like 4G and 5G connectivity, as well as USB-C ports back in 2015, and they also introduced innovative solutions such as in-screen fingerprint sensors. When it comes to wireless charging, the legacy traces back to the Samsung Galaxy S3 launched in 2012, although it’s worth noting that earlier devices like the Palm Pre with its Touchstone charger laid some groundwork. Fast forward to 2024, however, Android manufacturers seem sluggish regarding Qi2 wireless charging support.
The Arrival of Qi2
The Qi2 wireless charging standard made headlines when it was announced at CES 2023. This new specification promises enhanced functionalities such as a robust capability for up to 15-watt wireless charging and an added layer of safety protocols. Notably introduced were Magnetic Power Profiles designed for effortless alignment with compatible chargers. Ultimately, Qi2 aims to replicate what iPhone users experience through MagSafe products within the Android sphere.

Apple’s Unexpected Contribution
In a significant deviation from its usual practices of compartmentalizing technology within its own ecosystem, Apple decided to share critical elements of its MagSafe technology with members of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which oversees both Qi and Qi2 standards. Observing how positively MagSafe accessories have performed among iPhone users raises questions as to why Android brands haven’t promptly embraced this feature across a multitude of devices. However, despite nearly two years’ time since finalization—that’s how long it has taken before any more than just one device—the only verified supporter so far is HMD’s Skyline model.
models like LG G8 concerning biometric palm reading.
Despite potential challenges presented initially regarding proprietary solutions versus widely embraced standards—it doesn’t imply perfect compatibility isn’t achievable here—with popular accessories already extensively available like Anker’s line-up providing numerous options including power banks optimized explicitly integrating magnetic alignment systems via MagGo series gadgets.
