Apple’s Upcoming Blood Pressure Monitoring Feature for the Apple Watch
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is intensifying its efforts to introduce a blood pressure monitoring capability for the Apple Watch, aiming for a potential launch by 2025. This feature has been in development for several years, and initial plans aimed for its unveiling in 2024.
Functionality and Importance of Blood Pressure Monitoring
This innovative feature will not deliver precise systolic and diastolic readings but will instead monitor trends in blood pressure levels. The watch will issue alerts if it detects signs of hypertension. Users notified by the device can then consult healthcare providers for further examination.
Hypertension often goes unnoticed until advanced stages, earning it the moniker “silent killer.” Early detection through this forthcoming feature may prove life-saving. Presently, the Apple Watch offers functionalities such as atrial fibrillation detection and one-lead ECG measurements. While there is also a blood oxygen monitoring tool, U.S models currently have this function disabled due to legal disputes over patents.
Targeted Launch Timeline
Gurman notes that Apple’s intention is to roll out this tracking capability with the anticipated release of Apple Watch Ultra 3; it’s also expected that it would be available on standard models launching alongside in 2025. However, challenges remain regarding whether they can meet this timeline following previous delays. In testing phases back in 2022, reports indicated that there were concerns over accuracy that may have been addressed since then.
Additions Under Development
In addition to blood pressure monitoring technology, Apple continues researching noninvasive methods for tracking blood glucose levels; however, these advancements are not yet ready for public introduction.
