Smartphone Market Recovery in 2024: A Closer Look
The smartphone industry experienced a rejuvenating wave in 2024, bringing optimism to numerous manufacturers. While Apple and Samsung continued to dominate the landscape, several Chinese brands also reported substantial sales gains. After enduring a tough couple of years in 2022 and 2023, the smartphone sector witnessed a resurgence with last year’s growth hitting an impressive 7%, as outlined by Canalys. In total, approximately 1.22 billion smartphones were dispatched worldwide.
Apple and Samsung Hold Their Ground
Apple secured its position as the leading smartphone vendor for another consecutive year by distributing around 225.9 million iPhones throughout the year. Despite facing significant competition from Chinese brands, particularly within China’s bustling market where they encountered some declines compared to their performance from previous years, this drop was minimal at just one percent.
Sitting closely behind is Samsung, which managed to ship about 222.9 million devices overall during the same timeframe. With both corporations solidifying their dominance as number one and two respectively, they continue to set benchmarks for success despite emerging challengers.
The competitive landscape is evolving swiftly; Xiaomi has surged into third place with an impressive market share of around 14%, marking a significant growth rate of about 15%. Particularly fruitful was Xiaomi’s expansion in China where it delivered roughly 168.6 million units between them and other rising competitors such as Transsion, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, Lenovo, Huawei, and Realme rounding out the rankings.
Top-Selling Smartphones of the Year
An examination of global shipment trends reveals that Apple and Samsung collectively claimed most spots on the top-selling devices chart this past year. Notably taking center stage are three variations of Apple’s iPhone: leading with the standard iPhone 15 followed closely by its high-end counterparts—the iPhone 16 Pro Max and phone 15 Pro Max.
This preference underscores how well-received these new models have been since their launch in September; Canalys noted an uptick of around 11% over last year’s popular Pro series models within similar timeframes—a clear indication that consumer interest remains robust.
