Insights on China’s Smartphone Market: 2024 Shipment Statistics
Recently, Canalys published its smartphone shipment figures for China in 2024, and shortly thereafter, Counterpoint Research (CR) presented its own analysis. Notably, the two reports reveal strikingly different outcomes.
Market Leaders of 2024
According to CR’s findings, vivo dominated the market with a commanding 17.8% share throughout the year. In second place was Huawei, which captured 16.3% of the market. Interestingly, third position was claimed by Xiaomi at 15.7%, pushing Apple down to fourth place with a slightly lower share of 15.5%. Rounding out the top six were Honor at 15% and Oppo at 14.3%.
Divergent Reports from Canalys
Xiaomi’s absence from Canalys’ Top Five raises questions regarding the discrepancies between these two sets of data. Regardless, it is evident that vivo maintained its lead in total annual shipments—a fact supported across both studies—and Huawei solidified its second-place status with comparable market shares reported.
Growth Rates Compared to Previous Year
The data from CR highlights significant growth rates among various brands compared to their performance in the previous year (2023). Huawei experienced a remarkable increase of 36.4%, followed by Xiaomi at a respectable growth rate of 10.2%. Vivo also saw an uptick but more modestly at just 7%. Conversely, other brands faced declines in shipment numbers; Apple suffered the largest drop at -12.6%, trailed by Oppo with -10.4%, and Honor with -2.8%.
Q4 Performance Analysis
Focusing specifically on Q4 (October to December), counterpoint indicated that Huawei took charge with an impressive market share of 18.1%. Following closely were Xiaomi and Apple holding shares of 17.2% and just slightly behind at 17.1%, respectively; while vivo managed to secure only a distant spot at16 .3%. Additionally, Honor garnered a substantial share at13 .6%, whereas Oppo lagged behind with only12 .5%.
