Historic Achievement in Solar Manufacturing: U.S. Surpasses 50 GW Capacity
The United States has achieved a significant milestone by exceeding a production capacity of 50 gigawatts (GW) in domestic solar module manufacturing. This accomplishment positions the nation to potentially fulfill its entire solar energy demand through local production.
This development is pivotal in establishing a robust U.S.-centered solar supply chain that reduces dependence on international suppliers and fortifies job opportunities for American workers.
Expanding Production Capacity Across the Supply Chain
The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), through its Supply Chain Dashboard, indicates that firms have committed to generating an additional 56 GW of solar cell production in the U.S., alongside plans for producing 24 GW of wafers and another 13 GW of ingots. The manufacturing capability for solar trackers has also skyrocketed past 80 GW.
Abigail Ross Hopper, president and CEO of SEIA, commented on this advancement: “The attainment of over 50 GW in domestic solar manufacturing capability illustrates what can be accomplished with forward-thinking public policy.” She highlighted that these strategic policies have propelled the U.S. into becoming the third-largest producer of solar modules globally—a critical boost not just for the industry but also essential for reinforcing energy policy as a foundation for American job creation.
Aiming High with Future Goals
Back in 2020, SEIA established an ambitious objective to reach a manufacturing capacity of 50 GW by the year 2030—an output comparable to that generated by approximately twenty-seven Hoover Dams combined. This target encompasses various levels within the solar sector including modules, cells, ingots and wafers, polysilicon materials, trackers, and energy converters (inverters).
At that point in time, domestic module production was limited to just about 7 GW along with only modest capacities—41 metric tons—of polysilicon production along with some other inverter and racking outputs; more crucially though was the absence key upstream component manufacturing altogether.
