Understanding Apple’s Visual Intelligence Feature on iPhone 16
Visual Intelligence, a cutting-edge feature from Apple, is now available exclusively on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models as part of the iOS 18.2 update. This innovative functionality leverages the capabilities of the Camera Control button, broadening the possibilities for users to engage with their environment in new ways.
Activating Visual Intelligence
To access Visual Intelligence, press and hold down the Camera Control button for several seconds. A simple tap will launch the camera associated with Camera Control; thus, it’s essential to perform a distinct press-and-hold action for activation. Note that this feature will not function if you are already using the Camera app.
The interface designed for Visual Intelligence displays your camera view along with buttons to capture images and options labeled “Ask” and “Search.” The “Ask” function interacts with ChatGPT for inquiries while “Search” sends an image directly into Google Search.
It’s important to understand that you must take a photo of what you’re interested in looking up; this can’t be done through live camera feeds or previously taken pictures.
Discovering Local Businesses
If you’re exploring a new area and wish to gather information about nearby eateries or shops, start by holding down on Camera Control followed by pressing it again to take an image or tapping on the establishment’s name shown at the top screen.
This process will provide details such as operating hours, options for food delivery where applicable, menus available at specific locations, services offered by businesses, reservation websites, email contacts or phone numbers directly connecting you.
Simplifying Text Acquisition
If you encounter text—be it from signs or printed material—you can use Visual Intelligence to capture it through photos. By selecting “Summarize,” you’ll receive an overview of what’s written effectively distilled into key points.
This summarizing tool shines particularly when dealing with lengthy texts but is akin to other summary features found within Apple devices: concise yet often lacking deeper analysis.
Audiovisual Reading Features
The functionality doesn’t stop at summaries—if you’ve taken an image containing text data via Camera Control mode, you can have Siri read it aloud with just one tap of “Read Aloud.” Siri employs your selected voice preferences so that you can listen as well as read along!
